The format of the KCT Tour Championship is 18 holes strokeplay from the 59 tees and every one of those players has a chance to win the whole KCT (see here for the KCT rules).
The Kytäjä Trophy last week was the final qualifying event and the standings at the end of the "regular season" can be seen below (click on the picture to see the Order of Merit containing also those players who were outside the top 30 this season)
Statistics
A total of 122 players earned KCT points this season (meaning that 122 people finished in the top 10 of at least one event during 2012). This is a really encouraging statistic and points to a very healthy situation for competitive golf at Kytäjä. 8489.7 KCT points were won in total, with 2153.54 (over 25%!!!) of those points being won by the top 5 players in the Order of Merit. 24 men and 6 ladies qualified for the KCT Tour championship and there were 11 ladies in the top 60. Markku Olasmaa has the distinction of being the only player to qualify for the final who scored all of his points in a single event. |
Thoughts about my own KCT season
I found the KCT to be a real motivation for me to play in many events which were not perhaps targeted at lower handicap players... I had never found a reason to play in the kuukausikilpailu in 7 previous Kytäjä seasons nor would I have entered events like the Euronics Hyvinkää Open if there had not been KCT points available. My initial goal was to finish in the top 30 and qualify for the KCT Tour Championship, and I knew that would be a difficult task because almost all the events are handicap events rather than scratch... but once I found myself in the lead early in the season I became very keen to stay there, the KCT really got my attention! I hope that the KCT has also increased the enjoyment and involvement of many other Kytäjä golfers during the season.
After all that effort I have a great position going into the KCT Tour Championship... but there are 29 other people who can still win the overall KCT... it will be very exciting to see how it develops on Saturday as the season long effort comes down to one single round!
Good luck to all for the final
Andy
